Milan Fashion Week
Milan Fashion Week takes place twice per year — in late February/early March (Autumn/Winter collections) and in late September (Spring/Summer collections). While both editions feature the same major houses and the same fundamental structure, they have distinctly different characters in terms of atmosphere, social scene and the overall experience of being in Milan.
Understanding the differences helps you choose the right season for your fashion week visit.
The September edition of Milan Fashion Week is generally considered the more glamorous and socially significant of the two seasons. Several factors contribute to this:
Weather: Milan in late September is typically beautiful — warm enough to showcase the city at its most appealing, with the golden light of Italian autumn. The weather adds significantly to the enjoyment of moving around the city between events.
Collections: Spring/Summer collections — the September season — tend to be the more colourful, more dramatic and more visually spectacular collections of the year. The creativity and excitement in the shows is often at its peak.
Social calendar: the September fashion week social scene is typically more intense, with more VIP events, brand parties and associated cultural happenings than the February edition.
Celebrity attendance: September consistently attracts the higher-profile celebrity attendance of the two seasons.
For a first Milan Fashion Week visit, September is almost always our recommendation.
The February edition of Milan Fashion Week has its own distinct appeal, particularly for guests with genuine fashion industry connections or deeper industry knowledge:
Collections: Autumn/Winter collections — the February season — are often the more directionally important collections from a fashion industry perspective. The key AW trends are set during the February shows and the industry takes the February season very seriously.
Atmosphere: the February season tends to be slightly less social and more industry-focused. If you are a genuine fashion professional or industry insider, the February season is when the most important industry conversations happen.
Accommodation and availability: while still in high demand, February fashion week is marginally less difficult for accommodation and event access than September.
Weather: Milan in February is cold. The city is less appealing than in September and the outdoor elements of the fashion week experience are more limited.
For most VIP and lifestyle clients, September remains the stronger recommendation. For fashion professionals and industry insiders, February has irreplaceable appeal.
