Paris Haute Couture Week: Everything You Need to Know

What is Paris Haute Couture Week?

Paris Haute Couture Week is a separate and even more exclusive event from Paris Fashion Week Ready-to-Wear. Held in January (for SS Couture collections) and July (for AW Couture collections), it is the showcase for hand-made, bespoke clothing created by the official Haute Couture houses — the summit of clothing craft and the most exclusive fashion event in the world.

Haute Couture is a legally protected designation in France, regulated by the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. To present as an official Couture house, a brand must:

— Create made-to-order clothes for private clients, with one or more fittings

— Have a Paris atelier with a minimum of 15 full-time employees

— Present at least 35 pieces (day and evening) each season

The result is clothing of extraordinary quality — each piece may require hundreds of hours of hand labour, with construction techniques passed down through generations of specialist ateliers.

The Haute Couture Houses

The official Haute Couture calendar features a relatively small number of houses — in contrast to the 90+ shows of Paris RTW. Regular Couture houses include:

Chanel — the most symbolically important Couture house. Karl Lagerfeld and now Virginie Viard's Chanel Couture shows at the Grand Palais are among the most spectacular events in fashion history.

Dior — Christian Dior invented modern Couture with his 1947 New Look. The house continues to present some of the most technically extraordinary and culturally significant Couture collections of each season.

Valentino — now presenting Couture in Paris rather than Rome, Valentino's Couture is celebrated for its extraordinary colour and its incomparable evening gowns.

Schiaparelli — reactivated by the Chambre Syndicale and now under Daniel Roseberry, Schiaparelli has become one of the most critically discussed and culturally influential Couture houses of the current moment.

Giambattista Valli — spectacular, romantic, joyfully abundant. Valli's Couture is loved for its extraordinary ball gowns and its celebration of female beauty.

Jean Paul Gaultier — now inviting different guest designers each season, creating a Couture show that is one of the most anticipated events of each calendar.

Accessing Paris Haute Couture Week

Haute Couture show access is even more restricted than Paris RTW shows. The intimate scale of the shows (some fewer than 300 guests), the private client dimension and the hand-managed invitation process make Couture show access the most exclusive access challenge in fashion.

For non-industry guests, realistic Couture Week access options include:

Couture Week brand events — the dinners, private exhibitions and VIP events that accompany the official Couture schedule. More accessible than the shows and often more sociable.

Atelier experiences — where arrangeable, visits to the ateliers of Couture houses are one of the most extraordinary fashion experiences available. Seeing the petites mains — the specialist embroiderers, feather workers, jewellers and seamstresses — at work is an experience that no show can replicate.

Couture showroom viewings — some houses offer private viewings of the collection in their showrooms, accessible through the brand's VIP client channels.
