Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York, is the oldest sporting venue in America still in active use — having hosted thoroughbred racing since 1863. Known as 'The Graveyard of Champions' for the number of major upsets that have occurred on its turf, Saratoga is one of the most revered and romantically historic venues in all of American sport.
The Saratoga meet runs for six weeks in July and August, with the highlight being the Travers Stakes — the 'Mid-Summer Derby' — run on the last Saturday of the meet. The Travers is the most prestigious race for three-year-olds outside of the Triple Crown races and draws horses of the highest quality to upstate New York.

For an extended Saratoga racing trip, staying in Saratoga Springs itself (rather than commuting from Albany or other nearby cities) is strongly recommended. The town fills up during the racing season and accommodation books quickly — particularly for Travers week.
