Paris Fashion Week
Paris Haute Couture Week is the most exclusive and most prestigious fashion event in the world. Held twice a year — in January (for Spring/Summer Couture) and July (for Autumn/Winter Couture) — it is the showcase for hand-made, custom-fitted garments created by the world's greatest fashion houses for a clientele of extraordinary wealth and discernment.
Haute Couture — literally 'high sewing' — is a protected designation regulated by the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. To be officially recognised as a Couture house, a brand must meet strict criteria regarding the number of pieces produced, the number of fittings provided to private clients and the number of employees working on each garment. The result is clothing of a quality and individuality that exists nowhere else in the world of fashion.
The Couture shows — Chanel Couture, Dior Couture, Valentino Couture, Schiaparelli Couture, Giambattista Valli Couture, Jean Paul Gaultier Couture and others — are among the most intimate and most awe-inspiring events in the fashion calendar. Attending Paris Haute Couture Week is, for many, the ultimate fashion experience.
Paris Haute Couture Week has a substantially smaller and more exclusive attendance than Paris Fashion Week RTW. The shows themselves are far more intimate — some Couture shows are attended by fewer than 300 guests — and the credential system is even more restricted than for the RTW shows.
The primary attendees of Couture shows are:
Private Couture clients — the small number of private individuals worldwide who order custom Couture garments. These clients are invited directly by the houses and often have their personal fittings during Couture week.
Top fashion press — only the most senior editors from the most significant publications. The Couture press list is a fraction of the size of the RTW press list.
Celebrities and cultural figures — particularly those with strong brand relationships and those who wear Couture to major red carpet events (Met Gala, Cannes Film Festival, Academy Awards).
Major international buyers — for commercial Couture pieces and demi-Couture collections.
For non-industry guests, Couture show access is even more limited than RTW show access. However, the associated events — the Couture week parties, brand events and private exhibitions — provide exceptional access to the Couture world.
Several key differences distinguish Paris Haute Couture Week from the RTW shows:
Scale: Couture Week is smaller and more intimate. Fewer shows, smaller audiences, less media circus. The atmosphere is more refined and more focused on the clothes themselves.
Timing: January and July — quieter Paris months than September/October. The July Couture week benefits from summer Paris ambience; the January edition has the atmosphere of a more private, focused professional event.
Access difficulty: Couture show access is even more restricted than RTW. The private client dimension of Couture means that the shows are more closely guarded.
Quality of garments: Couture represents the absolute pinnacle of clothing construction. Each piece may take hundreds of hours to produce. The shows are opportunities to see the most technically extraordinary clothing made anywhere in the world.
Social scene: Couture Week has its own, somewhat different social scene from RTW — more private dinners, more intimate events, with a guest list that reflects the extreme exclusivity of the Couture world itself.

Dior Couture — under Maria Grazia Chiuri, Dior's Couture shows have become significant cultural events as well as outstanding fashion presentations. The Dior Couture client base includes many of the world's most prominent women, and the shows attract the highest celebrity profile.
Valentino Couture — Valentino's Couture is renowned for its colour, its romance and its extraordinary craft. Among the most beautiful shows in fashion, Valentino Couture has recently relocated from Rome to Paris for its Couture presentations.
Schiaparelli Couture — one of the most creatively provocative and intellectually engaging shows in the Couture calendar. Daniel Roseberry's Schiaparelli reactivates the house's surrealist heritage in a contemporary context that generates enormous critical attention.
